 UNNATURAL CAUSES

is the acclaimed documentary series broadcast by PBS exploring the root causes of our alarming socio-economic and racial inequities in health

The series introduction, In Sickness and In Wealth, will be shown on February 2.

  5:30pm Registration and Light Refreshments

6:00pm Unnatural Causes, Part One- In Sickness and In Wealth

  7:00pm Discussion

The seven part series crisscrosses the nation uncovering startling new findings that  suggest there is much more to our health than bad habits, health care, or unlucky  genes. The social circumstances in which we are born, live, and work can actually get under our skin and disrupt our physiology as much as germs and viruses.

Parts 2 through 7 will be shown at noon at the University Center Auditorium, except as noted*.

Becoming American (Feb. 10) Latino immigrants arrive healthy, so why don’t they stay that way?

When the Bough Breaks (Feb. 24) Can racism become embedded in the body and affect birth outcomes?

Bad Sugar (Mar. 10) What are the connections between diabetes, oppression, and empowerment in two Native American communities?

Place Matters (Mar. 24) Why is your street address such a strong predictor of your health?  (*Greenville Tec Multipurpose Room, McAlister Square Building)

Collateral Damage (Apr. 7) How do Marshall Islanders pay for globalization and U.S. military policy with their health?

Not Just a Paycheck (Apr. 21) Why do layoffs take such a huge toll in Michigan but cause hardly a ripple in Sweden?
